Art Appreciation Beyond Disability: Expanding Support Programs
Summary
In the field of art, where visual elements are prominent, new forms of appreciation are emerging that go beyond simply “seeing.” These include verbal discussions and tactile experiences. These efforts, exceeding “disability support,” provide us with many insights and approach the essence of art – “questioning common sense.” At the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, interactive appreciation sessions and tactile exhibitions are regularly held, where participants, including visually impaired individuals and sighted people, share their impressions and experiences. Experts point out that exploring universal ways of appreciation can lead to the rediscovery of a work’s appeal. The revision of the Act on the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities in 2024 also supports the expansion of art appreciation support. Artists emphasize the importance of mutual influence beyond disability, hoping that art will become a means of deepening communication.
