Kochi Avant-garde: Motonao Takasaki and Tomiji Hamaguchi
Summary
This exhibition traces the activities of Kochi-born artists Motonao Takasaki (1923–2017) and Tomiji Hamaguchi (1921–2009) to uncover the reality of the avant-garde art movement that occurred in Kochi in the 1960s. Both artists gained prominence starting in the 1950s, and in 1962, they formed the art group "Avant-garde Tosa School" with other local artists to initiate a new movement from Kochi. In the early 1960s, Hamaguchi engaged in conceptual production early on, while Takasaki established his reputation with his representative work, "Apparatus" (装置) in 1963, later joining the Kansai-based "Gutai Art Association" in 1966. The exhibition will showcase newly confirmed works and materials, systematically unraveling Hamaguchi's 1960s activities and the evolution of Takasaki's "Apparatus." By also focusing on the works of local artists in the Avant-garde Tosa School and the poets who ran parallel to them, the exhibition illuminates the Kochi art scene of the 60s, which has not been fully discussed until now.
