Ueno Station and Genichiro Inokuma's "Freedom"
Summary
An exhibition titled "Ueno Station and Genichiro Inokuma's 'Freedom'" will be held at the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art from March 1 to June 28, 2026, marking the completion of the third major restoration of Genichiro Inokuma's monumental mural, "Freedom" (1951), located at JR Ueno Station. Created during the post-war turmoil, the mural has symbolized Ueno Station, the "northern gateway" to Tokyo, for over 70 years. The exhibition will explore the mural's origins, Inokuma's philosophy that art should serve the public, and details of the recent meticulous restoration process. Visitors can experience the mural's massive scale (approx. 27m wide by 5m high) through life-size outlines and photographic reproductions. Furthermore, the exhibition will showcase the plan by the creative unit SPREAD to harmonize the station's overall space using "Freedom Colors," derived from the mural's palette.
