Ako Sugie | "World's Best Book Design 2024-25"
Summary
The author, currently working on a massive, thousand-page book over three years, believes that in the age of e-books and AI, the traditional medium of books might be perceived as fresh. The exhibition "World's Best Book Design 2025 Competition" at the Printing Museum's P&P Gallery featured 14 award-winning books that boldly explored expressions unique to the medium, likely as a response to the rise of new media. The works, predominantly from Europe, demonstrated high degrees of freedom in typography, such as layouts utilizing significant white space, text blocks that changed shape while turning pages, and the integration of vertical and horizontal text orientations. Another highlight was the German book, 'Size Matters' (Bronze Prize winner), which featured experimental use of size, including extremely magnified photographs and captions larger than the main text, demonstrating the potential of physical books independent of digital devices.
