Aoyama Shin | NejiPijin + YCAM "Generative Sensei" (Part 2)
Summary
This article reviews the second part of the performance "Generative Sensei" by NejiPijin and the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM). The author interprets the metaphor of "dialogue" in AI services as a "script" that prompts humans into specific behaviors. Just as Neji defines her expertise in "choreography" as "working to make movement emerge," the author posits that generative AI similarly choreographs us through dialogue. The review touches upon the reverse Turing test-like question posed in the work—whether the "Sensei" character is an AI—and notes that contemporary "AI-ness" has become overly explicit empathy, while asserting that AI is not necessarily trying to behave like a human. Furthermore, the author warns that the truly frightening future of generative AI is not dystopian scenarios but rather its mundane permeation without essential change. Referencing the concept of "weak robots" inspired by guardian deities (Dōsojin) placed in the venue, the author concludes by suggesting that generative AI might emerge as a third entity beyond fear or hope when we listen to and yield to the "small rhythms"—the meaningless utterances—produced by the bots.
