The National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Tokyo, has announced its exhibition schedule for 2026, including “J.M.W. Turner Exhibition – Dialogue with Sublime Painting and Contemporary Art” from October 24, 2026, to February 21, 2027. J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) is considered one of the greatest painters in British art history, known for his depictions of light, atmosphere, and the changing aspects of the world, including the effects of the Industrial Revolution. The exhibition will feature over 80 works, including oil paintings and watercolors, from the Tate Museum’s collection, which holds the world’s largest collection of Turner’s works. The exhibition will reorganize Turner’s works thematically and display them along a gentle timeline, and will also juxtapose Turner’s paintings with contemporary art to highlight the resonance between the past master’s concerns and those of later artists. The exhibition will then travel to the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art from March 13 to June 27, 2027.
