Yusuke Nakahara, One of the 'Big Three' Art Critics – AI, Environment… The Logic That Foresaw the Present
Summary
A symposium and related exhibition were held to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the death of art critic Yusuke Nakahara (1931-2011) and the completion of his 11-volume collection of art critiques. Nakahara was considered one of the 'Big Three' art critics alongside Ichiro Harunobu and Yoshimitsu Higashino, but while Harunobu took a social perspective and Higashino empathized with artists, Nakahara developed criticism based on logical thinking. Having studied particle theory under Hideki Yukawa at Kyoto University, Nakahara debuted as an art critic in 1955, stating that “criticism should not only explain the secrets of an artist’s creation but also transform it.” This idea is interpreted as reflecting the knowledge of quantum mechanics, where observation causes changes in the object.
