Editorial Notes...50 – The Future of Design Awards
Summary
This month, the Japan Institute of Design Promotion announced a new system for the 2026 Good Design Award. Chun Nakagawa, former chairman of Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten Co., Ltd., has been appointed as the new chairman of the judges. Mr. Nakagawa initially declined the offer due to his lack of expertise in design, but accepted the role believing he could play a part in fostering a common language between business leaders and designers regarding the importance of “branding,” as he perceives a weakening of Japanese brands. The new system emphasizes “design that contributes to vision,” highlighting that design should connect to the underlying vision of companies and organizations. The new vice-chairpersons are Dieko Kawakami, Moto Suzuki, and Yuma Harada. An article published by artscape discusses the importance of awards not just as a means of determining superiority, but as a device for updating values and stimulating discussion, functioning as a gateway to a “future archive.” The future direction and vision that will emerge through this award system are eagerly anticipated.
