Manga Artist Yoshiharu Tsuge Passes Away at 88
Summary
Manga artist Yoshiharu Tsuge died on March 3rd from aspiration pneumonia at the age of 88, having been in poor health since around September of the previous year. Born in Tokyo in 1937, Tsuge worked various part-time jobs before making his professional debut in 1955 with the book "Hakumen Yasha" (White-faced Yaksha), gaining recognition through rental manga and children's magazines. He garnered significant attention starting in 1965 by publishing works in the magazine "Garo," known for his unique style. His representative works include "Nezumi" (Screw), "Munō no Hito" (The Incompetent Man), "Gensenkan Shujin" (The Proprietor of the Gensenkan), and "Ri-san Ikka" (The Lee Family). Tsuge received the Special Grand Prix at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2020, was elected as a member of the Japan Art Academy in 2022, and was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 2024.
