The 'Light' Vase that Tomoe Shinohara was Inspired by. French Decorative Arts Transformed into a Dress | Asahi Shimbun Digital Magazine &[and]
Summary
Singer and designer Tomoe Shinohara became the ambassador for the "René Lalique Exhibition" held at the National Museum of Art, Craft and Science in Ishikawa Prefecture, and created her own work to coincide with the event. She was inspired by Lalique's "Vase Houppes" from 1927, drawn to its expression that seemed to trap light within the material. To represent the three-dimensional quality of the dahlia motif on the vase, she boldly adapted the traditional Southern French quilting technique called "Boutis," finishing over 200 parts by hand. The fabric used for the dress was woven and dyed in Ishikawa Prefecture, reflecting her desire to convey the region's manufacturing prowess. The completed dress was photographed at the museum and is currently exhibited alongside the original "Vase Houppes."
