Kenta Yamazaki | Adelaide Inspection Report ①: Festival and Fringe
Summary
The author stayed in Adelaide, Australia, from February 28 to March 6, 2026, to inspect the Adelaide Festival and the Adelaide Fringe. The Adelaide Festival is an internationally recognized arts festival featuring diverse programs across music, theater, and dance; however, its associated Writers' Week was canceled due to boycotts in 2026. In contrast, the Adelaide Fringe is one of the world's largest open-submission arts festivals, offering nearly 1600 programs across 15 categories, including circus, comedy, and food events, with a notable concentration of LGBTQIA+ themed performances. The author observed a fundamental difference: the Festival largely features traditional theater programming with international acts, while the Fringe utilizes temporary venues, possesses strong entertainment/commercial aspects, and emphasizes the performer's physical presence, serving as a venue to witness raw, live human performance. This inspection was part of the author's research goal to gain new insights and relativize Japanese performing arts, especially concerning LGBTQ-related works.
