GⅢ-Vol.164 Cultural Prescriptions for the Kumamoto Earthquake – When My Heart Began to Move
Summary
After the Kumamoto earthquake, people struggled through daily life, but gradually began to find moments of hope and smiles through encounters with beauty, creativity, and the kindness of others. This can be seen as a form of self-prescribed “cultural prescription.” In April 2025, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto University, Tokyo University of the Arts, and the Kumamoto City Museum of Contemporary Art began research and development of a “Kumamoto-style cultural prescription” aimed at increasing individual well-being by enjoying the inherent value of things, events, and people. Marking the 10th anniversary of the earthquake, this initiative seeks to reflect on what helped people overcome those difficult times and provide insights for future disaster recovery.
