Editorial Notes...49 – Sakurazukan and the Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition Japan Pavilion Returning Exhibition
Summary
The returning exhibition of the 19th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition Japan Pavilion was held at Sakurazukan, Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art from January 24th to March 1st. The author visited on the final day. Sakurazukan, built in the same year as the main museum in 1933, has historically been used as an office building. The exhibition, curated by Jun Aoki, responded to the Japan Pavilion’s architectural features with a concept of “fictional renovation.” The exhibition featured stories generated by AI, where the architectural elements of the Japan Pavilion engage in dialogue, along with installations by SUNAKI (Toshikazu Kinouchi & Taiichi Sunayama) and Fujikura Mako + Ohmura Takahiro. The theme, “Neutral Point | In-Between,” suggests the equal coexistence of different elements in an age of division.
