A large retrospective exhibition of Yukio Hideshima (1934-2018), a painter and printmaker born in Minamata, Kumamoto Prefecture, will be held at the Kumamoto City Museum of Contemporary Art from April 18 to June 21, 2026. Hideshima, who was born into a poor family and lost his parents at a young age, mastered painting techniques through self-study and gained national recognition from art critics and other artists. The exhibition will showcase approximately 260 works spanning Hideshima’s career from the 1950s to the 2010s. This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the official recognition of Minamata disease, providing an opportunity to consider Minamata as an element of Hideshima’s artistic world.
