Izu Ito High School Art Club Creates Commemorative Mural, Challenging an Unprecedentedly Large Work - Ito Duo (Izu Shimbun)
Summary
The art club of Izu Ito High School has created a commemorative mural to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Ito Shopping Plaza Duo. The mural depicts a vibrant scene with cherry blossoms, Mount Fuji, and shoppers including high school students and elderly couples, expressing the liveliness of the local community. Commissioned by the Ito Commercial Cooperative Association, the club members designed the mural based on the association’s initial concept. Painted on a 215.8 square meter concrete wall along the slope leading to the underground parking lot, it is the largest work the art club has ever produced. Students worked diligently for two days, overcoming challenges such as the unstable scaffolding and dripping paint, to complete the impressive artwork. Satō Rinka, a first-year student, said, "The color scheme was difficult, but I was excited to see it gradually come together." Murayama Shigeru, the executive managing director of the association, expressed his delight, saying, "I was impressed that they completed it exactly as we imagined in such a short time."
