Spring Edo Painting Festival: Nagasawa Rosetsu
Summary
The Fuchu City Museum of Art is concluding its annual 'Spring Edo Painting Festival' series, which began in 2001, with its final exhibition dedicated to Nagasawa Rosetsu, a key painter from the mid-Edo period. The appreciation of art shifts with the times; just as Itō Jakuchū gained renewed attention in the 1970s, Rosetsu's 'vigor,' once seen as lacking the composure of his master Ōkyo, was later celebrated as 'whimsical' and made him a star of Japanese art. In the 21st century, Rosetsu's appeal has expanded to include the 'cuteness' evident in his depictions of puppies, animals, and children, reflecting an inherent compassion rooted in Zen philosophy and Buddhist teachings. This exhibition, the first Rosetsu show in Tokyo in 64 years, invites visitors to explore his varied creations—landscapes, figures, and fantastical worlds—and appreciate 'Rosetsu in the 21st Century.' The exhibition runs from March 14 to May 10, 2026.
