Takashima Tsutomu | 'Beyond Flat: To Redraw Us' (Part 1)
Summary
The exhibition 'Beyond Flat: To Redraw Us' (Part 1) is a group show that expansively presents the critical potential of character representations in manga and anime from feminist and queer perspectives. Focusing on the works of myoujina name, Yamamotoreira, and Komiyamarisamarina, the exhibition re-examines the representation of girls under the commonality of appropriation. myoujina name's 'Lovely♡Mamichan Marriage and Divorce Set' presents a critique of heteronormativity by covering marriage and divorce forms with excessive decoration. Yamamoto reira's painting series 'Whispers of Defiance' focuses on the invisibility of housework and childcare in shoujo manga (manga for girls), revealing the distortion of care labor through the contrast with idealized mother-child images. Komiyamarisamarina's 'Operation: 1941/2026' quotes girl images from pre-war and modern times, presenting the male gaze and violence projected onto them. These works inherit the pioneering appropriation strategy of Mina Nishiyama and aim to restart the potential for denormalization.
