The Winners of the 34th Toride Mayor's Award (Fine Arts Category) for Reiwa 7 Have Been Decided!
Summary
Toride City has announced the two winning works for the 34th Toride Mayor's Award (Fine Arts Category) for Reiwa 7, selected from submissions to the 74th Tokyo University of the Arts Graduation/Completion Exhibition based on the university's recommendations. The winners are Teruno Kawamura for the oil painting "Saro" (Fork in the Road) and Ayaka Takahara for the metalwork piece "Flowers in the Field." Kawamura's work, created using a mixed technique of tempera and oil paint, was highly praised for capturing the tension of the present moment in nightscapes, reflecting how light changes with cultural context. Takahara's work features the Japanese endemic bird "Yamadori" constructed from various plants, symbolizing a wish for attention toward rare species and their natural habitats; the constituent plants carry meanings related to sustenance, vitality, and hope. The award-winning pieces will be exhibited free of charge at the Toride Art Gallery from May 1 to May 12, Reiwa 8.
