Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2026 Finalists Announced: 3 Nominees from Japan
Summary
The Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, established in 2016 by Loewe's Creative Director Jonathan Anderson to honor excellence, artistry, and innovation in contemporary craftsmanship, has announced its 30 finalists for the 9th edition. Over 5,100 submissions were received from artists across 133 countries and regions, from which the selection committee chose the finalists. The works of the 30 finalists, representing 19 countries and regions, span diverse fields such as ceramics, woodwork, textiles, metal, glass, lacquer, jewelry, and bookbinding. According to the press release, a notable characteristic of this year's candidates is their careful balancing act between equilibrium and instability or tension. The selection committee chair, Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, commented that they carefully selected works that push the boundaries of tradition through risk, skill, and imagination, highlighting how contemporary craft flows fluidly between art and making by weaving together cultural perspectives, technical knowledge (both pre-modern and modern), and diverse approaches to materials and form.
