Anti-Action: Their Responses and Challenges @ Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art
Summary
The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art is hosting a special exhibition, “Anti-Action: Their Responses and Challenges,” which reconsiders the creative activities of female artists who gained prominence in the 1950s and 60s in postwar Japan, using gender studies as a starting point. The exhibition analyzes how female artists were excluded from criticism dominated by men within the abstract art movement, and presents the concept of “Anti-Action” to capture their resistance. Featuring approximately 120 works by 14 artists including Yayoi Kusama, Atsuko Tanaka, and Hideko Fukushima, the exhibition showcases their unique challenges and the diversity of their expression. Related events such as special screenings, lectures, and discussion sessions will also be held.
