【Fukuoka】Yatai Research Project Exhibition — Let's Meet at a Yatai Tonight!
Summary
The "Yatai Research Project Exhibition — Let's Meet at a Yatai Tonight!" will be held at TAIYA SPACE in Fukuoka. This exhibition reports on the findings of the "Yatai Research Project—Akagi Seisakusho Edition," conducted since February 2025, aiming to re-examine the relationships with people and the city fostered by Hakata's yatai (street stalls). Many Hakata yatai have been built over approximately 40 years by Akagi Seisakusho in Fukuoka, utilizing solid cypress wood and the skills of joiners. These stalls have accumulated memories from owners, customers, and the city through daily use, but the craft faces a turning point due to the lack of a successor at Akagi Seisakusho. The exhibition deciphers the formation process and characteristics of the Akagi-style yatai through various media, including videos, photographs, and drawings, based on site surveys of the stall production factory, measurements of the stalls, the display of the "Kenzao" (standard pole), and interviews with Takako Akagi. The exhibition runs from February 14 to February 22, 2026, and includes related events like a talk series on the future of Hakata yatai and a walking tour of the Tenjin yatai area.
