Highest Award at Hokkaido Education Art Exhibition: Kamitani and Suzuki from Muroran Sakuragaoka Kindergarten Win for Picture Books and Creatures
Summary
Sora Kamitani (6) and Kaho Suzuki (5), students at Sakuragaoka Kindergarten in Muroran City, received the Encouragement Award, the highest honor, at the 51st Hokkaido Education Art Exhibition. A total of 6,505 entries were submitted from kindergartens, nursery schools, certified child centers, and elementary/junior high schools across Hokkaido. Kamitani's winning piece was a richly expressive depiction of a candy land inspired by the pop-up picture book "Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker." Suzuki's work featured sea creatures like sharks and electric eels, drawn based on a sketching session at the Muroran City Aquarium. The director of the school corporation noted that it was the first time in several years that two children from the kindergarten had simultaneously won the Encouragement Award.
