Masatsune Hojo: Journey of the Wind
Summary
This is a large-scale solo exhibition titled "Journey of the Wind" dedicated to the painter Masatsune Hojo (b. 1948), who has maintained continuous artistic activity in his hometown of Utsunomiya. Hojo was inspired to pursue painting after meeting local artist Tomizo Saito during his high school years. He studied Japanese painting at Musashino Art University under Takashi Asada and Takehiko Mori, gaining recognition early on by being selected for the Shinseisaku Nihonga Exhibition. He subsequently exhibited primarily with the Japanese painting group "Sōgakai," formed in 1974, receiving the Sōgakai Award in 1988 and becoming a member in 1995. Hojo's style, while rooted in traditional Japanese painting techniques, evolved dynamically over time, featuring various expressions such as silent, fantastical landscapes based on vivid blues, girls playing in exotic street corners, and countless rectangles depicting different spacetimes. The motif of "wind" frequently appears in his subject matter, often accompanied by elements like birds and the sky. The exhibition, featuring approximately 100 works including masterpieces and new pieces, seeks to explore what the concept of "wind"—something felt but unseen and constantly flowing—represented to the artist throughout his more than fifty years of creation.
