Design Concept for SANAA's "Rothko Room" in New Facility by DIC and International House of Japan Revealed; Partnership with Rothko Chapel Also Established
Summary
The successor facility to the DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art, which closed in March 2025, will be completed in 2030 on the grounds of the International House of Japan through a collaboration between DIC and the International House of Japan. The new facility will house about 100 transferred items from the museum's collection, primarily post-war American art, and will be designed by SANAA. A key feature is the new "Rothko Room" designed by SANAA to display Mark Rothko's seven "Seagram Murals." This new room will be located in the basement exhibition space of the entrance building, accessible via a meditation space filled with natural light, aiming to integrate the experience of nature with the contemplation of the artwork. DIC and the International House of Japan have also entered into a partnership with the Rothko Chapel.
