Aichi Prefecture's Plan for Japan's First Joint Art Storage Facility: How to Address Storage Shortages
Summary
Aichi Prefecture is proceeding with the development of a "Joint Art Storage Facility" to be jointly used by the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Ceramics, and the Aichi University of the Arts. This initiative aims to address the nationwide issue of art storage shortages by consolidating the storage functions of multiple institutions, with a target completion date of fiscal year 2030. Beyond mere storage, the facility is envisioned as a "Museum Backup Center" that will also serve educational and outreach functions by partially opening up preservation and restoration activities to the public. The impetus for the plan stems from the fact that the storage spaces at the three existing facilities, all over 30 years old, are reaching capacity, risking the proper preservation of collections due to potential damage or mold. The site chosen is the former Aichi Prefectural Tokoname High School grounds in Tokoname City, selected based on factors including disaster resilience, good access, and proximity to existing cultural assets and tourism infrastructure.
