A new international art festival, "Gero Art Discovery 2026," is scheduled to be held across various locations in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture, in the autumn of 2026. This follows the success of the smaller-scale event, "Minami Hida Art Discovery," held in Autumn 2024, which featured contemporary art, performing arts, and a local market. Gero City, known for Gero Onsen and facing issues of depopulation and aging, is the setting for this event. The General Director is Fram Kitagawa, known for his work on the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and Setouchi Triennale, who refers to Gero as the "deepest part of Japan." The festival is expected to feature 40 to 50 artists from 11 countries and regions, with 20 participating artists already announced.
