"Urban Vision - Obayashi Foundation Research Program" 5th Grantee Ho Rui An to Hold New Lecture Performance (Prototype) on April 4th
Summary
The details of the project by Singaporean artist Ho Rui An, the 5th grantee of the Obayashi Foundation's production grant program "Urban Vision - Obayashi Foundation Research Program," have been announced. Ho, who critically reinterprets narratives surrounding Asian economic history and colonialism, is conducting research for the Japanese chapter of a multi-year project reinterpreting the global economic history of East and Southeast Asian commercial hubs. This research focused on Japan's financial history from the 1890s to the 1940s, starting with the gold standard in 1897, involving site visits to Tokyo, Osaka, and Sado for archival and literature research. The artist specifically examined how cultural arts and visual expressions, such as government campaigns and silent films related to the gold standard, were linked to and utilized by power, also focusing on the role of benshi (live commentators). As a result of this research, a lecture screening titled "The Price of Gold" will be held on April 4th at the Hibiya Library & Museum, showcasing how existing historical narratives are reinterpreted through Ho's perspective.
