Matsuko | "Jam Session: Ishibashi Foundation Collection x Tomiyama Chikako x Shiga Rieko – Adrift"
Summary
The sixth Jam Session at Artizon Museum, titled “Adrift,” presented a collaboration between the Ishibashi Foundation Collection and the works of artists Tomiyama Chikako and Shiga Rieko, aiming to generate new creativity through the interaction of the collection and contemporary artists. The exhibition prominently featured Tomiyama Chikako’s video installation, “Recalling(s),” which explores themes of war memories, the act of storytelling, and fading recollections through multiple videos and soundscapes. Tomiyama’s work combines landscapes of Okinawa and Palau, testimonies from war survivors, and music, creating a composition that blends documentary and fiction. Viewers are encouraged to freely navigate the multiple video worlds, guided by sound, and interpret the meanings of each sequence from various perspectives. The exhibition also included Tomiyama’s past works and a video focusing on intergenerational succession, reflecting the artist’s deep connection to Okinawa and her commitment to confronting memory and history. The exhibition as a whole encourages viewers to reconsider history through layered connections to the land and experiences of others.
