Born from the influence of Western painting techniques during the late Edo and early Meiji periods, "Yokohama-e" was centered around painters such as the first Yoshio Goseda of the Goseda school. Over time, these techniques spread to other artists, leading to a diversification of themes and styles, and contributing to the rise of watercolor painting and the production of designs for export crafts.
The exhibition will highlight the development of "Yokohama-e" and shine a light on lesser-known artists and works from that era. Additionally, it will trace the career of Jirokichi Kasagi, a Yokohama painter who has garnered significant attention in recent years.
